Mayor condemns team picketing Loyalists who picketed a civic reception for a Gaelic Athletics Association team have been condemned. Flag waving protesters blocked the front doors of Coleraine Borough Council offices on Monday night.
The event was held to honour the Owen Roe club who made it through to the final of the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Championship.
The Ulster Unionist mayor of the town, William King, said such actions should be left in the past.
"We were hosting a civic reception for Owen Roe on their tremendous success and we're talking about sport here," he said.
"I think for 15 protesters to turn up and stand in front of the main door of the council building and to have to bring the young team in through a side exit was certainly very, very disappointing."

Were those Loyalists combining politics and sport together or was it just plain old loyalist sectarianism? Or maybe Loyalist politics is sectarianism wrapped in a different guise. Wait till Harry censors them!!

Let us see if Harry can bring himself to unreservedly condemn it. Or will it be his usual qualifications routine

First of all their should have been no picket or protest as people have a right to participate in whatever sport they want. However considering the sectarianism of the GAA in N.Ireland any sporing club/organisation that promotes sectarianism and glorifies terrorism should be treated to any form of civic reception.
When the GAA stops the double standards and promoting sectarianism, then they will be treated the same as everyother sporting body.

Yes but Harry says that he wants to seperate sport and politics and that sports news must be in the sports section only or he will delete it. Or has he changed the rules again, I can't keep up with these rule changes and interpretations.

We need somewhere to keep the spides. I thought that was what the Ashbourne was for? There's plans to nuke it at 12am on a Sunday morning, so don't you be fishing in it, anything interesting going on in Dublin this week as I have to go down to temple bar to pick up a sleeping bag from the northface store.

There are no promotions of anything religious or specifically anti-Protestant in the GAA. You are getting political nationalisim mixed up with religion.
