I was talking to a guy who is a friend of a freind from Dungannon several days ago, after chatting for a while he went on about the travelling community. I sat with interest as he told me how they had ruined his estate with their fighting, thieving, noisiness etc etc and how the police are never away from the area.
He gave me quite a few examples as he described these dirty, thieving, lying fighting hatefull bastards(his words not mine) and how no-one can sleep because of the noise of their parties and fights.
Anyway a while later we were all talking about anytime we got in trouble with the cops and he told us how the police came up to his house and asked him to turn down the music because neighbours had complained which resulted in him shouting all sorts at the police and resulted in his arrest after he punched a cop.
Then he informed us he has been arrested several times for riotous behaviour, arrested falling a domestic with his bird, arrested for stealing a cd player from a shop, barred from homebase because of stealing and is barred from most local bars for fighting.
I asked him how long ago was all this and he said that he was only out of jail a few months and all this had happened within the last few years.
Hypocrite of the highest order or what???

he is as the americans would say a tool - the sort - and if arrested following a domestic means he was smacking his wife well lets just say i spit on men like that. Men who raise their hands to smack women about cease to be men as far as I'm concerned and I wouldn't piss on them if they were burning.
He sounds a great neighbour -nothing new in scapegoating travellers - there is a vacant lot near my house here where travellers used to park as it had access to water etc and made a good spot to stop. From the uproar some people made you'd think aliens from mars had invaded but in fact the travellers bothered no-one kept themselves to themselves and it was all panic over nothing.

Fair play to them then, BA, but they used to wreck my home town. They thieved, they fought, they swindled and battered the shite out of their wives. They say that if you want to know me come live with me and I know that I never ever want to live near a pavee "community" again.

Theres a camp 2 minutes up the main road from where I am right now, have had to deal with them a few times, when we moved here they kept stealing our washing from the line and once I caught the fucker and chased him for about 10 minutes (caught him, got my stuff back and told him if he would do it again, well, you know what happens).
My mam found a dog with pups that was near starved and belonged to some fella up there and when she went to take it to the vet he came running out demanding it goes no where, this dog can barely walk, hasnt been washed in weeks and could barely moan... we eventually took it anyway and called the police but they wouldnt do anything about it; if it was anyone elses dog they would have.
But in the past few years they've calmed down loads, probably been told to knock it on the head by the older lot who live there.

IMO there are plenty of solid examples in which they live up to the stereotype characters that many people have, but some of them are misunderstood and are not the usual stereotype or perhaps as bad as the usual opinions of them.

It was domestic to the extent of republican housekeeping in their area. Apart from that it is wrong for a man to slap a woman and it is highly condemned, but not so when men abduct a woman infront of her kids, probably torture her, execute her and don't give her children a body to bury or a grave to go to.
IMO no republican can moan about anyone lifting a hand to any woman as they are just showing and proving the hypocrites that they are.
Like ask a republican do you condemn a woman getting a slap, and then ask about her being abducted and executed, my mind boggles.

Where did I say it was right?
I can moan, I was never in the IRA neither was anyone who has posted in this article. If you want to go by that thinking then neither can any loyalist, meaning you, even if you dont support what the UVF done.

I didn't say you said it was right, it is just strange and hypocritical to hear republicans condemn someone for hitting a woman yet support/excuse or cant condemn someone who done what was done to Jean McConville.

What has that go to do with travellers?
What happened in the troubles is different to what happens in the home, I don't know a lot about McConville and don't really care its not my worry, but as far as I know she was abducted for being a tout, rightly or wrongly I leave up to individual judgement, I say wrongly. Thats fuck all to do with Republicans and any that may be wife beaters.

Indeed, I've never been in the IRA, the last people in my family in that would have been my grandfathers during the war of independenc and my paternal granny who was strongly republican (of her children only my father is -his sisters and half-sisters are generallly indifferent).
Here's my feelings on McConville - one NO-ONE here is in a position to know the full facts of that event. Two, killing her was wrong and pointless whatever the facts were. Three why was this dragged in arbitarily into this thread WASP? As we are condemning torture are we condemning all torture WASP - including that carried out by republicans, loyalist, the British Army or whomsoever.
This thread was ostensibly about your feeling that your mate was a hypocrite in condeming people when he was as bad if not worse - it could grow into an interesting exchange of views on travellers and the discrimination shown to them by both the Irish and British state. I'm not saying everyone in the travelling community is a little angel either but the situation is like most things ambigous and not black or white.

Quite simple really, I was in agreement with you on men hitting women and she came into my head, simple as that. But at least one of your reasons is that we don't know all the facts, absolutely ridiculous.

do you know something we dont? I think we all know a 4ft 10" woman and motehr of 10 children, was abducted infront of her children and became one of the disappeared. We know it was an IRA unit dubbed the Unknowns who dragged Mrs McConville from her home in December 1972. We know she was buried 31 years after her abduction and this was said at her burial, ""In the history of our troubles there can be no more despicable act than the abduction, murder and casual disposal of the body of Jean McConville and subsequent plight of her 10 children," said Monsignor Thomas Toner in her funeral homily.
"It is our most shameful example of the moral corruption and degradation that violence generates in the human spirit." We know the ira accused her of being an informer. We know her family always denied this and that she only helped a dying soldier. I think as humans we would or rather should give comfort to the dying but none of this matters when it comes to the horrific abduction and death of this woman. No accusations of being an informer come anywhere close to justifying what happened to her. I guess when we hear republicans condemn with strong words those who lift their hand to a woman we should remember their words are hollow and remind ourselves of their lack of condemnation over the murder of this poor woman. Is it the lack of humanity within republicans, is it the violent nature of republicans or is it they just can't condemn such horrific actions because it was their ownside??? In all honesty I find this hard to understand and believe, much like of course we would condemn a Catholic being burned to death in their own home if it was attacked by loyalists but won't condemn Protestants burned to death at La Mon. This shows the depth of sectarian hatred and bigotry within republicanism and yet they point the finger at Unionists.
