It's examining 11 year olds Earl. Like a Junior, Junior Cert. www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/educational-news.phpAcademic selection also allows schools to chose their pupils, with some schools only taking the brightest. It's nothing to do with it being a "British" Institute at all Bilk and I thought as a Socialist that you'd agree with steps that try to remove elitism. Sorry I know what you mean about me being off thread with the 11+. But I'd like to answer this. I am a socialist, but both my sons got to go to a grammer school which was once reserved for the elite. I don't agree with the socialist policy that allows the rich to set up their own elitist schools that only the well heeled in society can go to. I would rather a child get to one of the better schools because of his ability rather than how much money his dad has. That is real socialism, not the crap that all are equal. All should have the same oppertunity that is socialism

a gaelscoil is a school that teaches in irish. i went through gaelscoils from nursary to secondary. But do her two children goto grammer school in N.Ireland whetehr it is an Irish speaking school or not. Here are some posts about her from being on the politics show. The so-called minister should be ashamed of herself over her stance over the classroom assistants. Minister, stop avoiding questions! Maybe Ms Ruane could answer the direct questions. Verbal confusion continues; too many words but little sense. Is Mrs Ruane wrecking our education system, taking away a system without one to replace it and destroying our classroom assistants who help the most needy? How is this woman in charge of our education system? She hasn't got a clue. What's this woman talking about. I am more confused than when she started. She's just waffling. Change can be good but she's not explaining anything. ;D ;D ;D Would the Education Minister please answer the question put to her and stop skirting round the subject and putting a political spin on it. ;D ;D ;D Angry Aggie queen of waffle. ;D ;D ;D This minister is trying to avoid questions. ;D ;D ;D Being from the SF heartland, west Belfast, I'm embarrassed by C. Ruane. Marks for people skills: zero-minus. ;D ;D ;D Does the Minster know what she is talking about? ;D ;D ;D Minister keeps saying 'Let me answer my question!' When does she ever intend answering everybody else's question? ;D ;D ;D Ask her why is it her two children go to grammar school in Northern Ireland? Glad I've no children. I would not be happy at the so-called minister leading them blindly into something she clearly knows nothing about. ;D ;D ;D The Education Minister should stick to what she knows best, flights from Colombia. ;D ;D ;D What a waste of time. The Education Minister didn't give an answer to one question! Why on earth is she in charge of our children's education? ;D ;D ;D I will never vote for Sinn Fein again. Caitriona Ruane needs to admit she has made a mistake and leavet he 11-plus the way it is. She is going to fail all our kids. ;D ;D ;D I think as a parent, and every other parent and teacher that I know, think the 11-plus should stay and the Education Minister should go. ;D ;D ;D Why can the Minister not answer any question? Does she not know the answers? Seems like it. Pure waffle. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Tell her to answer the bloody question. my child is in P5. We don't know what is happening, neither do the teachers. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Tell her to get her so-called act back to the south and stay in it! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D She will not answer any question. The teachers do not know what is happening. She is talking rubbish. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I chose to stay in Northern Ireland in favour of Sweden because of the quality of education. Would someone with brains please make this woman resign. ;D ;D ;D wELL DOESN'T THE THREAD TITLE SUIT HER DOWN TO A TEE. wHAT AN IGNORANT TWAT SHE REALLY IS

We don't know, I don't know nor care about her private life. Keep in mind she also has to push through party policy anyway even if she believes differently.

Shouldn't she then follow party policy that she is preaching to others. Simple as this she hasn't a clue and she should resign immediately. She is nothing other than a joke.
Setanta the subject of the 11+ fully concerns Ruanne, the subject of her taking free dinners off poor children concerns Ruanne so please tell me why you suggested a name change for the thread and then continued to say to continue haveiung a go at Ruanne?
BTW you never replied to my post concerning what you accused me of.

I think you are forgetting her job mate, shes a minister, a politician, not some moral preacher. Being anti 11+ does not automatically equal being anti grammar school, it only looks for other alternatives to academic selection. so you are literally looking to score points.
There's nothing jokish about her doing her job, she is doing a fine job as a minister, a few mistakes here or there, but no one is perfect.

So taking free meals off the poor is doing a good job or is that just one of her few mistakes and you claim to be a socialist ffs. Shes a joke and a hypocrite. I don't claim to be a socialist I would just be a lot more left thinking than right thinking. My opinions are always changing as I learn more, not doing a politics degree for nowt! I don't agree with taking free meals off the poor but do you remember when Thatcher took away the milk from the kids? You have said many times she was a great woman and a great leader and so on. Besides the quality of the meals is rubbish and we spent more time playing with our food than eating it in school, and just going to the shop so that would need to be fixed anyway. Same kids afterall. Other than that, theres nothing that she's doing terribly wrong, all ministers are given a budget to work with and they can't overspend, the money just isn't there to spend with. We can't generate enough money of our own because a lot of it is shipped back to London, and Gordon Brown didn't give us nearly enough to deal with these things, something Peter Robinson was furious about. The Republic gave us a lot of money but its not still not nearly enough when we are in the middle of rebuilding an economy. Some things have to go, some things have to stay, I don't think a tray of chips is going to starve the kids to death. If you want to blame anyone blame whoever makes the budget to each department and demand more money is put into the education department instead of leisure or culture which can fund itself reletively well.

They still goto grammar school and shouldn't a senior minister be following party policy on such important matters as this?
I have wrote to a party concerning this and I await my answer, also can you not follow it up within your party and contact the education board etc to do with exactly what they said as well as others in the article.
And I am right about where it came from, the title of my document was bbc(N.I history).
Absolute bollocks setanta.
Thats your description of it, many think different.
BTW did you see her latest live performance as a comedian? She invited journalists to Stormont to ask her questions and she only read a statement and then refused to answer questions. She's a joke.

More Catholic schools 'will defy Ruane' www.newsletter.co.uk/n...4028457.jpCatriona Ruane faced a blistering attack A FORMER teacher in a Catholic secondary school last night launched a blistering attack on Education Minister Caitriona Ruane. Carmel O'Boyle, a teacher in Castlewellan for 29 years and member of the South Eastern Education and Library Board, said the Sinn Fein minister was presiding over the "privatisation of education". Rebellion And Mrs O'Boyle, who is also an SDLP councillor, predicted that other Catholic schools would follow Lumen Christi College in Londonderry in defying the minister and introducing their own tests. "This is a mess of Sinn Fein's own making, primarily because they chose to hand the education portfolio to a minister to whom this area has always been foreign," she said. Despite supporting Ms Ruane's stated desire to abolish academic selection, Mrs O'Boyle said: "Exhortations to the minister to show leadership are belated and futile, since she clearly has neither the communication skills, nor the specialised skills needed to persuade people that academic selection is wrong. "I, like everyone else, have been waiting impatiently for twelve months, to hear the details of Ms Ruane's elusive 'proposals' and so far, all we have been served up are platitudes about how much she cares for children." Attack Mrs O'Boyle said Ms Ruane was "a woman who either preaches or harangues" and attacked her espousal of the education system in the Republic of Ireland — while she sends her children across the border from her Louth home to a grammar school in Northern Ireland. And, referring to the announcement on Wednesday that the Association for Quality Education (AQE), which announced on Wednesday that it intends to set up its own transfer process, had no need to slip in by the back door, when Ms Ruane has left the front door wide open for them. "She has presided over the privatisation of selection by allowing the AQE enough time to advance their proposals, and, like Lumen Christi College in Derry, other Catholic grammar schools will follow suit, or risk catholic children opting to do the entrance tests to the voluntary grammars."

Ruane in 'no confidence' vote www.newsletter.co.uk/n...4035977.jpRuane is under fire again Ruane is under fire again ALMOST two thirds of primary school headmasters are unhappy with the Education Minister, it was revealed today. And almost half of Catholic primary headteachers have no confidence in Catriona Ruane, a newsppaer survey said. Many of the school chiefs accused the Sinn Fein MLA of giving them no answers over thet future of transfers to secondary schools in place of the 11-plus, to be ditched next year. Controversy An Irish News survey of 90 principals was carried out amid controversy caused by 31 grammar schools banding together to say they would establish a company to run their own independent entrance exams. The Catholic Lumen Christi College in Derry will introduce its own academic aptitude test when the 11-plus is scrapped after this autumn. Disillusioned A total of 48.9 per cent of Catholic schools disagreed with the statement that they have confidence in Ms Ruane's ability. And with 84.2 per cent of state schools disillusioned, this left a two thirds majority expressing concern. Around one in ten of the 867 primary schools in Northern Ireland took part in the research.
