Just as you mentioned winos it just happens I met one this morning when he fell a clatter. I picked him up and sat with him for a while listening to all he had to say about his life. His words 'just look at the shape of me now' really upset me as this guy used to have a good job, wife, kids and a nice home. Now he has nothing.
Rather than give him money I went and got him a coffee, sandwich, bottle of water and a packet of fags. Poor sod my heart goes out to people like this.
Maybe setanta the winos should take over from traffic cops. In all seriousness that is a lovely story and it does restore some faith in the world.

Not only is he a c**t but so are the people who stood around laughing. They should all be charged. Where is the human deceny here? I mean FFS last week my sister helped an old woman who fell and broke her leg on Marlboro Street, just like any of us would. But somehting that restored my faith in people no matter how low they may seem was that, All the winos that drink in the laneways, back of the Gresham, Sackville Place, side of Barneys and that, came out, rang an ambulance, cleared people away who were gawking and then to top it off, the winos diverted traffic and cleared a path for the ambulance down the narrow Marlboro Street! This was a 15 to 20 combined wino operation, on several street corners. There is still good in this world but fucks like that in BA's link make it hard to see it sometimes Setanta your description of this boy is spot on,would'nt ye like to see this cretin doin this and his mates laughin at the woman. In this case I can justify any violence you can think of.Baseball bat of the back of his head would be a good start. Like WASP says its annoying to see people like that who have got into difficulties and their life has just fell apart, for these people I would do anything to help them, but those pharisees that look down their nose at them, well I think the baseball is called for once again. WASP your gesture was a Christian one indeed, good on ye.

what i hate personally is the way in london people pretend the homeless are invisible as though they could never end up like that -if you talk to them you find many themes in common - there are a LOT of ex forces living on the streets here who became so institutionalised in the army that they could not cope on civvie street as they had never learn the appropriate skills. I am not saying the people are little angels but who would be giving the daily struggle for exsistence living on the streets must be. I remember working in the west end on shop refits for a long period and seeing the same faces and getting to know some of them. Their lifes were not great to say the least - i remember one young boy of 16 or so who all of us would buy a coffee or sandwich for who had been sold by his parents to pimps and who made his living been buggered by older men against park railings or in hotel rooms. And there were LOTS of girls and boys like that - the tourists never saw that underbelly of London's west end but it's pretty squalid deep down. The police were fuckers as well, half of them were in on scams and on the take. Youd see them turn up and think oh good they're about to arrest some of the real scum but instead they'd have a wee chat and tea with them and you could see they were all pals.
