Did the Brits ever really 'invade' though? I used to think so, but now I think it was more a gradual merger between the two islands, rather than any 'invasion'.

Now that I've been reading about a lot more about history, yes there was mergers between people, just as there were mergers throughout Europe which created the very nature of these islands. That doesnt mean there was no English invasion, there was, and the presence of the English and then British army shows it was not a gradual merger either. The invasions were on and off as people fought and paid off others untill eventually the English armies were clearly established throughout the entire island. Thats a very er, basic view on it, but I'm still reading a lot about it to be honest, it wasnt as simple as that.
