Now I have just finished a night shift and I am trying to wind down before bed. So my brain is fuzzy, but when I get time I need to check my history. But was in not during Carter's admin that the Iranian issues started? Leading to the US diplomats being held hostage in the Embassy, which Regan messed up even further? Funny how these guys get different views of their positions once out of office, but when in they play the team game.

You will have to do a couple of reviews for the book section, eh Setanta!
While I do suppose that everyone can teach something and that you never stop learning. I wonder about the blind spot of the likes of Carter. Who did not practice what he is now preaching, and you wonder would he be not better converting himself first and then what he says might carry some more creditability.
The issue if Ireland being at the forefront as a Human Rights champion seems to suggest that if Ireland is at the forefront then Human Rights is in a sorry mess. You only have to look at some of the home grown issues and question that logic. Young pregnant women leaving Ireland to get abortions. State complicity is the cover up of child abuse in state and religious institutions and aiding religious orders to evade the law. The treatment of the men in Mayo in their dispute with Shell, hardly stands out as a champion of Human Rights. Not that long ago we had section 30 where the state censored politics.
The idea that Ireland owes Carter a debt for comments he made and no action he or his administration took in 1977 seems strange. This is just a mutual back slapping exercise and Ireland is just playing the game of insignificant money swapping to 'good causes' that deliver no good.
What developing country want Americans coming in and telling them what is a good and fair election. Surely a look at Florida and election abuse in American might be more beneficial to developing nations.
