A growing trend among young mothers has been to pop to the local shop in their pyjamas and housecoat. When this first started some time ago the trend was rare and usually restricted to early morning. Now it has become more common and women can be seen at various times of day in the pj's and housecoat. I even saw one young women climb into a black taxi in Turf Lodge wearing her pj's and housecoat. I sort of wondered was she going into the city to shop dressed like that!
The local paper (A/town News) has been highlighting this growing trend. It has got to the stage that a local school principle has sent out a bulletin to parents.
Short Strand school St. Matthew's principle Joe McGuinness wrote: "Over recent months the number of adults leaving children to school and collecting children from school dressed in pyjamas has risen considerably. While it is not my position to insist on what you wear, or don't, I feel that arriving at the school in pyjamas is disrespectful to the school and a bad example to set to children".
In an interview with the A/town News he went further and said there is an old word called slovenliness and it could be applied to these people. But I remember standing behind a girl in bright red silk pj's at the local shop. And it was obvious that her hair was damp and she smelt freshly washed, and I got the impression that she had just stepped out of the shower, it was also obvious that she had underwear on and make-up applied. So why not the clothes?? And could you say she was slovenly?
It has never really bothered me, but I did find the behaviour strange. And did joke about it to friends.
Is this trend evident in other locations? And what do people think?
