Orangemen replace couple's stolen Christmas cash
Dec 17 2010 by Eric McGowan, Irvine Herald
BIG-hearted Orangemen had a whipround to replace an elderly Dreghorn couple’s stolen Christmas savings – after reading about their plight in the Irvine Herald.
Members of Dreghorn and Parish Loyal Defenders LOL 218 were so touched by Eddie and Isabella Short’s story they clubbed together to raise the full £400 nicked by a bogus window cleaner.
Eddie, 65, and Isabella, 60, of Cumbrae Court, had scrimped and saved the cash for a year to buy presents for their four grandchildren before the callous conman struck on November 26.
On Friday, as an Orange Order delegation led by County Grand Master Jim McHarg of the Dreghorn Lodge visited the couple’s home to hand over the cash, a tearful Isabella said: “I just can’t believe it. I’m totally overwhelmed by the lodge’s generosity.”
“It was looking bleak for us but thanks to them Christmas is back on for my grandchildren.”
Eddie, who suffers from osteoarthritis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, added: “It’s absolutely brilliant. It’s restored my faith in human nature.”
Jim asked the Irvine Herald to put him in touch with the couple after reading our story about the heartbreaking theft. He said: “I just thought it was absolutely despicable and my first thought was how can I help them.”
“I mentioned to everyone in the Lodge and they were keen to help out in any way they could.
“Everyone just felt appalled that anyone could do this to an elderly couple.
“We give to charity through the year and we thought this was a particularly deserving case because it’s right on our doorstep.”
Police are still appealing for information on the theft which happened at around 9.30pm as Isabella counted out the money in her living room. She believes the robber watched her from outside as she divvied up the cash for grandkids Cherry, 10, Kaitlin, 14, Dean, 16 and Robin, 18.
Information to police on 01294 404400.
