I think he has to go now, otherwise it will look like he is getting away lightly just because he is a royal. Either he is in the army or he is not!!
Although maybe if the stupid british media would stop banging on about where and when he is going, it might make things a little harder for the insurgents to actually target him!!
i would have sympathy for whatever soliders are on duty with harry, they are going to be at considerable extra risk.
although not to be dismissive, if harry was killed, i cant imagine it having a fatal affect on the monarchy, given that the line of succession wont be altered.
what do you think LL?

Even if he agrees with the deployment, I agree that he is going to be a target that will put his and other lives in danger. I would think that it would be difficult for any high profile person to blend in with the other troops. And I'm sure it will be the stupid media that is going to keep painting the target on his back.

republic's point about perceived preferential treatment is the important one I think. A number of the royals have served in other conflicts, prince andrew as a helicopter pilot in the falklands war. Usually the rule is that the male members do serve in the forces quite a bit but the heir is normally kept out of operational theatres. Charles served in the Royal Navy and was by all accounts a good officer but had their suddenly been a major war I doubt they would have told the heir to the throne to run an active command on a destroyer or frigate!
Having said that I can see it must be a security nightmare for Harry's commanding officers. Wherever they put him or whatever they do they will face endless flak.

i think the decision will be made by more than just his commanding officers though, marcus (you dont mind me using marcus, i prefer the familiarity of it? ;D ;D)
i'd say downing street and buckingham palace will be involved in most of the decisions too. its a political dilemma as much as a military one imo

republic no you can call me marcus by this point i think mate. Coming from a military background with family in our esteemed Defence Forces I'm just glad we don't have royalty. Yes it is as much a political dilemma, I'd say let him go and take the risk. The risk is fairly minimal and the PR would probably be worth it.

I think he should go, this is what he wants.
But is the preferential treatment if he doesn't go anything compared to what may well happen if he does. Attacks on the British will increase dramatically and also there will then be the fact in the eyes of many muslims that a British prince is part of the 'occupying' forces, so that will give them all the more reason to attack Britain.
I know if I was to go on patrol with him I would immediately come down with a mystery stomach bug.

I think that was Willy who broke up with his bird (shes not bad, either).
He'll not be on patrols, he'll be sippin tea with commanders and captains and whatever else they have in the army. Picture the propaganda if he was killed, only for the other side. It would be 10x more than when Saddams sons were killed.

you have commanders in the navy the equivalent army rank is lieutenant-colonel. Just thought I would be super pedantic. Yeah I couldn't see someone saying, 'Lieutenant Windsor lead a patrol out now!'. They'd probably make him ADC to some high ranker and as you say he'd sit in on their briefings or similar.

Probably a handy way for the Royal family to get rid of Hewitt's young lad. You know, a nice hero's funeral and all that.
