DIEHARD republicans have slated tourism industry leaders in Kerry for a proposal to invite the Queen of England to visit Killarney.
The Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation said a royal visit to the county, to mark the 150th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s visit next year, would be "priceless" in terms of boosting visitor numbers from the UK.
But a man claiming to represent the Munster Republican Movement has contacted The Kingdom to voice his staunch opposition to the proposal.
"Those calling for a visit to the 26 counties by the Queen of England should be reminded that she is commanderin-chief of the British forces responsible for the murder of innocent Irish civilians," he said.
"Some of the business people in Kerry are promoting the idea of a visit as a boost for tourism, but this type of base commercial approach overlooks the activities of the forces of the British Crown in Ireland,"the spokesman added. The Munster Republican Movement insisted that the fact that Queen Victoria visited Kerry in the last century is of no consequence and cannot be equated to the present day.
“The reality is Ireland is still partitioned and that partition is enforced by the presence of armed British forces. If these people and business interests who promote the idea of a visit by the Queen of England really have the interests of the Irish people at heart they should persuade the queen to withdraw her armed forces from Ireland and allow the Irish people national self-determination," the organisation added.
The spokesman warned that republicans in Kerry, Cork, Limerick and Clare are united in their opposition to a visit by the Queen of England.
