AK-47 ‘belonged to Provisional IRA’
Gardai are satisfied that an AK-47 assault rifle seized during a planned raid on a house in Cork yesterday belonged to the Provisional IRA.
They believe the rifle had been part of the huge haul of weaponry decommissioned by the Provisionals as part of the Northern Ireland peace process but it had not been handed in for destruction.
Officers arrested a 60-year-old man detectives believed was a republican sympathiser. They said they did not believe the rifle was intended for use in criminal activity.
Acting on intelligence, gardai searched the house and a vehicle at Gurrane, Ballyhea, at 9.30am yesterday and found the rifle.
The man was being questioned by gardai last night under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. The AK-47 was the favoured rifle of the provisionals during the latter half of their terrorist campaign and was a key component of two massive arms shipments imported from Libya and landed at Clogga Strand, outside Arklow, in 1985 and 1986.
A large number of the rifles were subsequently recovered by gardai when they uncovered a network of arms hides dotted across the Republic and the rest were decommissioned by the IRA.

Am I surprised that some of the decommisioned weapons have gotten into the wrong hands? No I am not, not in the least. And of course this man wasn't going to use this gun for anything illegal, he probaly needed it for shooting crows or some other pesky bird. He said he wasn't and of course they believe him am I surprised at that either? Nope. Republicans never lie, so it has to be the truth

Well done to the Guards for capturing this fire-arm. There's no room for guns anywhere on this island. How can someone be a "Repuplican Sympathiser" and shoot innocent people at the same time? Not the sort of Republic most of us want.

You mean the weapons the Provos got when RIRA members were still Provos?
Thought so.

No I mean the weapons that were moved by the ira beofre they decommissioned some of their weapons, thought it was pretty obvious Jim, even republicans acknowledge that the ira would have moved a few guns here and there.

Weapons were moved about all the time. It would be foolish to keep them in one place for very long.

Of course they purposely kept weapons especially if it meant helping others with arms nevermind for their own purposes. Dont get me wrong Jim the loyalist groups would have done the same IMHO.

Others as in dissidents? That would be a weird one, considering it wasnt long about the RIRA/CIRA were putting bullets through known Provos windows to keep them quiet.
