There is a strong possibility that the Pope may visit Northern Ireland next year, the BBC has learned.
On Wednesday, news broke that Pope Benedict XVI is to travel to the UK for the first papal visit since 1982.
The BBC's Rome correspondent David Willey said there were "strong indications" the trip would include a visit to Northern Ireland.
However, a spokesman for the Catholic Church in Ireland dismissed it as "pure speculation".
Martin Long from Catholic Communications Office said there had been no confirmation of such a visit from official church sources.
Michael Kelly, Deputy Editor of the Irish Catholic newspaper said he thought a Northern Ireland leg of a UK visit was highly unlikely because the church in Ireland organises on a 32 county basis.
"The papal nuncio in Dublin takes responsibility for Northern Ireland rather than the papal nuncio in London," he said.
"The majority of Catholics in Northern Ireland would have nationalist sensibilities.
"The Vatican are certainly not going to do anything which would the offend those sensibilities, for example tagging on a visit to Northern Ireland which would exclude the Republic would seem to me to be extremely insensitive."
The 30th anniversary of the last papal visit to the Republic of Ireland will be marked this weekend.

I'd have no problem with such a visit but the sensitivity surrounding it should be well thought out. I'd hope it could be accomodated

I can't believe people are talking about culture and security. This is a man whose organisation mass-raped and abused hundreds of thousands of childern. This is an organisation that would prefer people to have horrific diseases than use condoms. I hope he gets ran out of it.

Collina in fairness to you, you break the mould at times and you are at times a stronger critic than me which is saying something. Fair play to you.

Collina in fairness to you, you break the mould at times and you are at times a stronger critic than me which is saying something. Fair play to you. WASP, and I mean no disrespect to Collina, but he is saying nothing different from most people in the country. The RCC is dying out in Ireland. Most people can't stand it. The lack of responses to your RCC posts is due to a complete distaste for the RCC. It is toast, no one cares about it. WASP, I don't know if you have seen it, but this is worth a look: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jHqndf9Kx4So frustrating that the wankers in govt haven't got the balls to sort out the church completely, once and for all. Between the economy and the abuse crisis, FF are fucked. Hopefully forever.

Republic with all due respect people here cannot stand my culture, they cannot stand the OO, they cannot stand the British (you know what I mean by that) etc etc yet they have plenty to say and make plenty of responses.
So why the double standards from these people??

So why the double standards from these people?? The OO doesn't bother me. I don't get it at all, but let them be. I don't see any reason to hate the British, though I thought the invasion of Iraq was particularly cowardly. The RCC is a different matter though. It should be ejected from this country, the same way an ambassy would be shut down with an enemy country.

That's the thing Collina, they dont bother you, you dont get it but let them be. I do not expect you to understand the OO etc or anyother part of my culture you don't get, but letting them be is key to peace and reconcilliation.
The Iraq war, absolute disaster for everyone, especially the Iraqi people.
Again fair play to you, but it is strange that I wouldnt have viewpoints as extreme as yours no matter how understandable your points are.

I genuinely see the Vatican State as an enemy. How else would you describe a state that exercised power over people, raped and abused them, extracted tributes from us to enrich their own country, and believed that their law supersedes our law. I believe in time, people will come to see its occupation of the Island as being a far greater evil, than anything the various invaders ever did.

Thankfully they do not have the same influence over people here as they did in the republic. Dont get me wrong Collina I fully support the freedom to worship or not to worship regardless of the faith or beliefs. But concerning what the catholic church has done not only in Ireland but throughout the world is both unbelievable and unforgiveable, but I am also sure theire are many good people within the RCC who are equally disgusted at what has happened and what was allowed to happen. Its like something you would expect to hear from an unclivilized group/nation etc.
Thankfully the victims know or hopefully know there are people like you out there.
