If anyone fancies a battle renactment or two, Swords is the place to be this weekend.
BATTLE LINES will be drawn in Fingal this weekend as thousands of military enthusiasts descend on Swords to attend a vehicle exhibition and re-enactment show, writes CIARA O’BRIEN
Salute, organised by the Irish Military Vehicles Group (IMVG), is in its third year and attracts everyone from military enthusiasts to families interested in alternative entertainment for the weekend. Between 4,000 and 5,000 people are expected to attend the National Show Centre in Swords to watch battle re-enactments and view a large selection of military equipment on display.
There are numerous military-themed organisations around Ireland that hold their own shows, re-enactments and exhibitions. Salute brings them together under one roof, with some attendees coming from overseas.
“This is one of the largest shows of its kind in Ireland,” says Keith Douglas, who has taken part in the show since its first year and now offers a helping hand to organisers. “It’s not just vehicles and re-enacters, it encompasses everything. It’s an educational show.”
The event has something for every battle enthusiast, from ancient warriors to more modern warfare. Battle re-enactments will be taking place in the main arena throughout the day, with everything from Viking and Roman re-enactments to the second World War and the modern era.
Between 60 and 70 vehicles will be on display: small military motorbikes, Land Rovers, armoured personnel carriers and tanks, all owned by private collectors, and including two Chieftain tanks owned by the IMVG’s Sean Curtis, at 63 tonnes the largest vehicles in the show. “They do 4.2 gallons to the mile – not miles to the gallon,” says Douglas.
Salute is one of the few shows where military vehicles can be seen in action, with a 43-acre gravel arena acting as the stage.
Traders will be selling everything from army surplus goods and clothing to collectible items, and a number of food stalls. For younger members of the family, there will be children’s entertainment, including go-karting.
Salute is at the National Show Centre in Swords tomorrow and Sunday from 10am till 6pm. Admission €8 for adults and €5 for children
