Possibly because: a) He is associated with (and blamed for) the UUP's electoral wipeout; b) and c): Why wouldn't he want to go? He stands a better chance of being elected to Westminster with the Tories than the UUP.

YES I understand the comments, but I feel David Trimble gave all he could to the UNIONIST party. All Parties change, the DUP started wanting to smash Sinn Fein, then never talking or working with. To now being in Government with the party. The SDLP and their then leader John Hume...stormed about on Magilligan beach in search of Civil Rights.. to now being a party in "Catch - Up" If ever. The UUP and even in David's time held the fifedoms and positions of authourity, times have changed. HE HAS CHANGED.. Like the Republicans and Nationalists who are now part of the new community, I would not have thought this possible 10 years ago, But thats POLITICS

Setanta I did not think you needed a history lesson. But here is a quick pointer - The UUP have changed names a few times (OUP, etc). But they split from the British Conservative Party (Tory Party). And there has always been a close link as the split was over the north and on a 'principled' position rather than ego. So for the UUP moving to the House of Lords and to the Tory Party is like steps on the career ladder.
I am not sure what Ulster2016 is on about, I think he is trying to make subtle political points between the lines. But is unable to formulate it together in a manner that makes sense, but no doubt he is only learning and will eventualy get the hang of it.

I agree his ego does make one wonder. But on this point I will speculate, that because of his ego and self belief of being important that he needs to feel wanted, desired and willing to be used as a willing tool inside a party that has real muscle rather than in a party that is in terminal death throes. And any impact he would make on it would be as a failed leader.
Peter Robinson once said that the UUP would not know how to sell a good deal if they had one. And I would agree with that and further add that they did not recognise a good deal when they had one and spolit by creating red-herrings to appease a shrinking element within Unionism.
Reg Empey's choice as UUP minister is a further example of bad leadership. And his shock when everyone else gasped incredously at this choice. Michael McGimpsey is a failed politician and should have resigned after his 2005 defeat coming in third behind SDLP's Allister McDonnell, and DUP's Jimmy Spratt (a new boy on the scene). But here in the north failed politicians are allowed to hang on and on.

Thank you SETANTA
I know now that my answer was not conclusive and did not follow the question.
I think David Trimble left the Unionist party to further his own well played out career. I honestly think he feels the Tories will have a place in ULSTER'S/ Northern Irelands future. Leslie another overlord joined the Tories and he was about as far removed from local people in his constituency as you would be in Northern Irelands local politics

The UUP have taken the Tory whip for decades in Westminster, they have a common agreeement to back eachother up on bills so its natural that Trimble went to them. As if he would go to Labour.
He's already getting senior in the tories, he's been with Cameron on a few campaigns and meetings around the UK and if they end up willing the next election (hopefully they dont), he'll probably end up being a minister or a junior minister. He's a career politician now. You don't often get Lords being ministers, but theres one under Labour but I forget what position he holds, he's better paid then Blair either way.

I think Labour have or had a couple of 'Lords', in and arround the cabinet. With the shuffles I forget who is in and out. There is Lord Leevy and Lord Roker (not sure on the spelling of those names, and I think there is a Lady .. and some more).
