Uefa Cup violence: Manchester in Champion's League TV U-turn after football riots
The city of Manchester has abandoned plans to erect big screens for the all-English final of the Champions League next week after last night's Uefa Cup final descended into a night of violence.
Fifteen police officers and one police dog were injured when hundreds of disgruntled Glasgow Rangers fans went on the rampage after their 2-0 defeat against the Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.
Richard Leese, the city council leader, said plans to showcase next week's Chelsea vs Manchester United final of the top league of European football would now be unfair on local businesses and residents.
Fifty assaults were recorded and 42 arrests were made.
In one incident, a senior police officer was hit so hard that his earpiece was embedded in his head and had to be surgically removed.
A Russian fan of Zenit St Petersburg was also stabbed inside the stadium but his injuries were not life-threatening. One shocking sequence of CCTV footage released today showed how about 20 fans hunted down a police officer, kicking and stamping on him as he lay on the ground.
Gordon Brown called the scenes a "disgrace" that may have jeopardised England's bid to host the 2018 football World Cup.
