Heu Setanta, somne of the best poteen I ever had came from the Glens of Antrim. Beautiful stuff, you'd be seeing fairies for a fortnight after a couple of jags...

Poteen belongs to both traditions on the island. The Scots-Irish in the Appalachian mountains carried on that tradition and made it, except it was called 'Moonshine' in the States.

I drank poteen once in college. Damn near burned all the lining out of my stomach.

I've attempted to drink the proper Absinthe from the Czech Republic. 80% proof and also contains a hallucinogen from the wormwood plant. It dissolved the skin between the back of my nose and throat (or at least had the same effect as if it was!)

I tried it when I was 17 and had to go throw it back up (along with my gravy chip) because it was too much and I was only a lickle beer drinker.

From those tales I would say that most of you are drinking the crude stuff. Nowdays you can get a wide variety of 'poteen' and none of it is any more vile that the commercial stuff. A lot of times myselves and associates would use the barter system. So you are paid in various forms other than hard cash. One friend is a dedicated Salmon fisherman but under the law he can only keep one or two of the fish caught. But along many rivers the keepers have a deal with local hotels etc. One such side deal involves the exchange for salmon for 'poteen'. And you can select from a few 'flavours'. I prefer the 'Baileys Cream' varierty but there are many 'Bacardi Breezer' types also. But during the Salmon season last year it got out of hand. We were only dealing in 5 gallon drums. I do admit the hangovers are a put off but I am unsure if it is the amount consumed or the additives, which cause the hangovers. I am assured it is the ammount consumed.

You know by experience, a small sip should tell the taster everything. But temporary blindness can have its plus side!
