This is really pedantic of me but this news reports goes on about them been assisted by a Garda rescue helicopter. Pls, BBC check your facts -the Garda don't have any rescue helicopters- that red and white helicopter is an Irish coastguard machine and previously was leased by the Air Corps until they passed all search and rescue functions over to the coast guard. The Garda's air wing consists of 3 helicopters and one plane at the minute. www.transport.ie/marine/IRCG/index.asp?lang=ENG&loc=2029www.military.ie/aircorps/fleet/fleet.htmThat took me all of 5 minutes to find for God's sake.

Yeah, I think that organisation remained intact after partition.

yeah i know - which is something i have no problem with at all - insitutions like that fulfill an essential role and it was best to just leave it as it was after partition and not fix something that wasn't broken. In any case considering Ireland's woeful record up till recently with regards to funding the naval service or coastguard who else would have been there to do the job?

The report on the TV said "Irish coastguard" I take it you mean the online report? maybe they got mixed up because it says "Garda cósta na NÉireanne"
