If it was that simple the IRA wouldnt have gotten off the ground nevermind stick around! I doubt they're spying on just IRA, but also anyone involved in any type of political activity that is against the state, people who take part in parades, etc.
Its not on, if it happened in England the Government would be committing political suicide. But we're just confused paddy's so it seems to be acceptable.

Its also not just republicans they are looking on. There is only so much I could say on a public forum but a man from north africa I know very well has been approached by MI5 multiple times (through phones, waiting around in cars following, showing up at his work and at the mosque he attends) even though hes been throughout europe and only recieved this type of treatment in the UK. He works hard on a low paying job and doesnt bother anyone, hes as much a terrorist as Wasp is the Prime minister. Its clearly not just spying on Republicans, its anyone who doesnt fit the part.

I always felt that Terry Gilliam's film 'Brazil' was always based more on the reality of British life than science fiction.

Jim some good points there but we all have to remember those in charge of our country's security don't know this person or people as others do. How many terrorists have been found that friends, neighbours and families had no idea about. Take those that were involved in Glasgow airport, some were from the medical proffesion and would be the least likely suspect.
Unfortunately this means that those who are innocent can also be suspects as the security forces do not know for sure. Who would suspect doctors of being involved in trying to kill as many innocent people as possible? This makes it almost impossible for the security forces not to suspect innocent people. If they were not doing there job and more massacres happened then we would blame the security forces especially if it turned out that one name was passed onto them etc, if they do as much as they can then they are condemned for hounding people. A no win situation.

Nope, they dont, but when it was painfully obvious this guy wasnt up to anything they still kept following him around, they only stopped bothering him directly when they happened to phone him while he was in his solicitors office, no doubt hes still being watched. Personality wise you can tell from the first time you meet him he wouldnt fit the bill, a lot of these arab medical students or proper al qaeda suspects are very open mouthed, very politically minded and very aware of how to deal with interrogation, a bit like some ex IRA volunteers, actually - trained how to deal with it. MI5 arent stupid, from the moment they set eyes on you they asses you, how you walk, how you speak, your movements, where you go, when you blink, how often you blink, your body language, your voice, how you breathe.
I agree earl, well, apart from we dont have Robert deNiro floating about dressed as an angel.
