A possible future brother in the international community of Republics. About time! Apparently, 40 % of the Oz population claim Irish decent. With many aboriginies, Greek-Austrailians and Asians, I'd be pretty confident of Oz becoming a republic.

Before you get too excited mate, Rudd has said he won't be looking at any debate on a republic (let alone a vote) until at least the second term. And I'm not sure how committed poeple are to the idea of a republic, especially here in NZ where there is an inbuilt conservatism that would be handy for the "status quo" merchants.

It'll be interesting this time, with Malcolm Turnbull, the opposition leader, also an avowed republican. Might be fairer than the last abortive attempt anyway.
