How do people view the ever growing amount of CCTV in our towns?? I see it as a good step and if it combats the thugs that blight our streets then good but it has to also have some respect for privacy. Maybe its one or the other???
CCTV to be put in 19 town centres CCTV cameras are to be erected in 19 town centres CCTV cameras are to be erected in 19 town centres across Northern Ireland, Policing and Justice Minister Paul Goggins has said. Mr Goggins launched the scheme in Newtownards, one of the town's where the cameras will be installed.
He said the cameras would help reduce crime and the fear of crime and also help cut anti-social behaviour.
"I believe that CCTV has a crucial role to play in making our communities much safer," the minister added.
Grant Dugan, 19, who was badly beaten up in Newtownards last year said he was glad to see security in the town stepped up.
"It will act as a deterrent. I used to go out in Belfast and the security there was tighter than it was in Newtownards and Newtownards was becoming a bad place," he said.

Lot's of crimes go undetected even with the CCTV in towns, I was once wrongly accused of committing a crime in the town center and when the cop said he had me on CCTV doing it I near fell on the floor with laughter and asked to see the evidence as I knew it couldn't be me and was a case of mistaken identity.

Excellent idea and the more cameras the better IMO.

If I done that outside my mams house it would be stolen in a day, or I'd catch half of west belfast's hoods when they burn cars outside the door.

There are too many crimes especially violent ones and all too often those who carry out such acts get off the hook because they usually have been along with 10 friends in there grannys house helping her knit and clean.
These cameras do act as a deterrent but they also help bring about prosicution.

WASP, you know Harryville and it has CCTV all around it. Outside the moat bar which is one of my locals there is a big CCTV camera which sits on an island in the middle of the road, it watches the front door of the Moat all the time. Now i have lost count of the amount of kickings i've seen people get outside that pub and the CCTV camera zooms around and watches every bit of it and yet no police turn up or nobody ever seems to get arrested over it? I find this truely strange and it makes me question the effect CCTV has???

The effectiveness of CCTV is usually so it can be rewinded and analysed after the incident if people go to the police, most of them are unmonitored.
The only ones I can think of that are monitored are around car warehouses where there are hundreds of 60k cars sitting around waiting to be stolen.

Probably because they don't want the paper work or something. Has any local complained to the police about this and asked for an explanation? The dup office is one place to take any query too as that office does work hard for the community especially the poor people in the area. About time this was complained about to the police.

Did you watch Panorama this week and the ammount of paperwork the police have to do nowadays? Canada, Austrailia, NZ etc are coming over poaching the cops to do a job with little paper crap to do.

Don't klnow about OZ, but there's just as much paperwork here in NZ as in the UK. And we don't need any more of your cops, please. We got a shipment of Scousers up her ein Auckland a year ago and the local criminal fraternity are complaining that the Scousers haven't left anything worth stealing....
