Newspaper apologises over claim Orange Standard October 2009 edition
THE SUNDAY World newspaper has issued an apology following an article which appeared in the newspaper on January 4, 2009.
The front page article alleged that Maze Orange Hall had been used by paramilitaries to carry out punishment beatings.
The Sunday World has now retracted the story and placed an apology on the front page and an inside page of the newspaper .
."The Sunday World apologises to the Star of Maze LOL 130, Lisburn, and the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland for the story published on the front page of January 4, 2009," the front page apology said.
The inside apology stated: "On January 4, 2009, the front page of the Sunday World showed a photograph of Star 0f Maze Orange Hall near Lisburn, accompanied by a heading 'House of Pain' and a sub-heading 'UDA uses Orange Hall to carry out punishment beatings'.
"Our story alleged that the Orange Hall on the outskirts of Lisburn was being used by paramilitaries and beatings were being carried out there.
"We now accept this story was totally without substance and the allegations were untrue.
"We apologise to the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland and in particular to the members of Star of Maze LOL 130 and we sincerely regret our erroneous reporting.
" We accept that paramilitary activity is not compatible with membership of the Orange Order, which is working hard to play a positive role in Northern Ireland community life."
