LEFT ... Orangemen march along Victoria Road
By Laura Crothers SCARBOROUGH Orangeman Dougie Syme has thanked police and council officials for their help in staging this year's Orange march. Members of the order marched through the town on Saturday.
Members of the Lord Louis Mountbatten Memorial Lodge, Orange Order from Scarborough, were joined by orangemen from across England, Scotland, and Ireland, to take part in the 90 minute march, which started at noon. Between 250 and 300 marchers were escorted by police as they set off from the Lancaster pub in Sandside, and marched around the town before finishing back at the Lancaster.
Dougie Syme, 56, secretary of the local Orange lodge, said: “I was pleased to see the usual large turnout, and would like to thank Scarborough police and Scarborough council for their support.”
The parade usually takes place on the last Saturday of March when Orangemen around the world take to the streets to show their support for the monarchy and the government and commemorate King William of Orange bringing democracy to the country in 1690.
